We all have our favourite items in our wardrobes. The one’s where we are like Mario when he finally gets that elusive super star. For that short period of time, we get a boost of confidence. Any self doubt we did have is squashed. Most men would view their superstars as a maximalist piece. A hype pair of sneakers that indicates a limited edition swoosh or three stripes or a shirt that clearly displays a high fashion luxury brand logo. There are some clothes that just fit your personality, and for me, it’s the band collar shirt.
Wearing flashy eye catching outfits has never been my MO. While it is by no means a menswear secret, the band collar still has not hit the mainstream market just yet. The shirt (a shirt with no collar) strikes the perfect balance between looking just a touch different from everyone else, but also seamlessly blending in, which is how I want to dress.
While my closet still lingers with some former fucboi vibes, everytime I pull out a band collar shirt from my closet, it’s a reminder that I made my next personal leap in style. Hopping onto the preppy stuff and looking like a young professional never felt right. It also wasn’t in the cards to just dial back on menswear. Everyone knows once you get into the style game, you don’t just quit. You just find the next peice, aesthetic, and style to obsess over. So I went with a simpler aesthetic, replacing gaudi tees and tops with a crop of monochrome band collar shirts. The transition was pretty seamless as the shirts blended in with my daily uniform (black jeans, sneakers, and hat) effortlessly.
It’s not a secret that many of us who value menswear also value versatility. It’s a buzzword that has been used over and over again. It might sound cliche, but so many of us who write about menswear preach it because it’s true. If you’re looking to get the most for your return on a expensive purchase, having it jive with other pieces in your closet is essential. I turn to the band collar shirt time and time again because it’s a minimalist piece that plays well with everything else I own.
When you wear your favourite piece, you know you have something special when it goes beyond it’s functional means of keep you from being butt ass naked. It’s not just about how the clothes make you look, but also how they make you feel. Simply put, the band collar just makes me feel good whenever I wear one.
