The GQ X Gap capsule collection is fast fashion collaboration done right. Each year GQ announces a handful of winners they feel are the best new designers in America. The newly crowned designers then team up with the global retailer to create unique capsule collections that are made available to the masses.
This year, GQ announced Bespoken, Ernest Alexander, Baldwin Denim, and Aviator Nation as the best new designers in America. The capsule collections were launched on the 24th. The collection has a good variety of signature items from each designer. Aviator Nation’s collection focused on surf inspired sweaters and knits. Baldwin Denim re-created their timeless denim classics. Ernest Alexander introduced a collection that featured their signature bags, while Bespoken crafted a collection that featured classic men’s tailoring with a modern twist.
Having gone in the early morning to one of the three Gap stores that were carrying the collection in Toronto, I was able to snag some quality pieces from the collection. Here are some thoughts of the pieces I was able to pick up.
Ernest Alexander Waxed Duffle Bag
Ernest Alexander’s bags are some of the most coveted bags in menswear. The weekend duffle is no exception as the bag sold out at the Gap I went to. The waxed duffle is everything youwant in a duffle bag; it feels sturdy, has a removable adjustable strap with polished brass details, a separate compartment to store a pair of shoes, and a fresh pop of orange for the interior lining. For $88.00 (CDN), this bag was definitely a steal, and a must have.
Baldwin Tech Jean Jacket
The Baldwin tech jean jacket takes the silhouette, fit, and trimmings of a Baldwin jean jacket. Instead of using denim, Matt Baldwin replaces it with thermore insulated nylon. The end result is an extremely affordable ($88.00), warm, lightweight jacket that is the perfect layering option for the colder months ahead.
Bespoken Wool Knit Tie
Bespoken has been known for mixing their youthful rock and roll style with traditional menswear. The Bespoken wool knit tie is the perfect tie that accomplishes just that. The tie is cut slim, not skinny and the tweed fabric of the tie is an ode to the traditional menswear. At $30.00 (CDN) this tie is a must have accessory.
Fortunately, for all of you who haven’t had a chance to pick up any pieces from the capsule collection, there are still some quality pieces left online. Here are the links below:
